When another driver runs the red light or stop sign or in some other way fails to follow the rules of the road and crashes into you, you become forced to travel the medical-legal-insurance maze. In most cases, injuries (like neck injuries) heal within a few weeks, days, or months. It is best to see a knowledgeable MD right away and follow up with recommended treatment.

Before you ever have an accident make sure you have good insurance. Remember, when you buy auto insurance, it not only covers you for any mistakes you make, it also provides you coverage you can get if a person who injures you has no insurance or not enough insurance to fully compensate you for your loss.

In Washington, your insurer must provide you UIM (uninsured/underinsured motorist insurance) unless you decline to have it in writing. You should get the highest limits you can afford.

You should also purchase Personal Injury Protection Insurance or PIP. This provides medical benefits and income loss benefits for you in any accident whether or not you are at fault. It also protects anyone in your car. Minimum benefits are $10,000 medical for one year, although you can get it for three years. You get $200/week income loss after 2 weeks off work, for a full year. You can purchase benefits of up to $700/week for up to three years. Get the most you can to cover your loss. This insurance tends to be broader than typical health insurance.

If you are injured and you are not getting better, or you find there is a significant disruption in your life lasting more than a few weeks, then you should contact an attorney experienced in handling cases involving motor vehicle collisions.
